I enjoy the autonomy of being able to manage an HR function that gives a real return on investment in the store. I begin my many daily jobs in HR Management by doing a shop floor walk, feeding back on presentation standards and catching up with Department Managers and Supervisors to see if they need my advice or support. Every day the Store General Manager has a huddle where we get together to talk about the previous day's sales, shrinkage figures and gaps. Then I’ll discuss where we are in terms of targets and what we need to do to hit them. Managing the capability of our people in store to drive results is my priority.
I discuss on a daily basis the operational HR performance of the store with my team, covering absence, outstanding reviews, pending disciplinaries or grievances, training or areas of concern. Strategically, I work with the Regional Performance Coach on succession planning for key roles in the store, reviewing our talent pipeline and identifying when we need to resource externally.
After that, my final daily jobs in HR Management will vary depending on what's on – it might be launching a new employee reward scheme, managing the annual employee opinion survey or working on a one-to-one basis to coach and develop a Supervisor or Manager. I spend a lot of my time on the sales floor, talking to customers, and coaching colleagues to ensure they are performing to the best of their ability.
