We've developed a comprehensive package of rewards, "makro & me", designed to help and enhance your home life, from offering lifestyle benefits, through to managing money and savings, to looking after your health and wellbeing.

Here are a few of the rewards and benefits you may be able to take advantage of:

Health & Wellbeing

Healthcare

Some roles offer paid membership of our Private Medical Healthcare and Dental Scheme. If healthcare is part of your package, you can also add family members to the scheme at a discounted cost. This is a taxable benefit.

If your role does not offer Private Medical Healthcare as part of your package, you can still benefit from the self contributing Health Cash Plan, starting from as little as £4 a month. Children can be added for free and you can add your partner at a discounted cost. This scheme offers dental, optical and physiotherapy benefits.

Healthscreening

Eligible colleagues can take advantage of a BUPA Wellness Health screening every other year.

Employee Assistance Programme

Provided by Health Assured, this is an independent telephone service that you can call at any time for support on anything life throws at you. You can call to discuss your health and wellbeing, stress affecting you at home or at work, financial worries, family and relationship matters and consumer issues. The service is completely confidential and is available to you and your family members who live in the same household.

This service extends to a lifestyle website with useful information to support your fitness goals, health fact sheets and lifestyle assessments.

Eye Tests

We offer free eyes tests to all our people who use PCs continually, as part of their role on a daily basis.

Gym

Based in the Support Centre and open to all colleagues, our gym is available to use Monday through Friday for a nominal monthly fee.

Communal Staff Area

All of our stores and our Support Centre offer facilities for colleagues to buy snack meals and refreshments.

Lifestyle

Company Cars

Company cars are allocated to those who travel excessively on business or those whose remuneration package includes a car/car allowance.

Holiday Entitlement

Holiday entitlement varies but Makro offers everyone at least 22 days' holiday per year which increases in line with service. After 5 years' service, you will be entitled to 26 days' holiday. For part-time staff, this entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Loyalty

We also reward long service with even more days holiday after 10 years' and 15 years' service.

Flexible Working

We've implemented flexible working policies for those who need them most – people with children aged under 16, people with disabled children aged under 18 and those who are carers can apply to work flexibly. We consider all applications equally and fairly.

Childcare Vouchers

Our voucher scheme saves parents money because you buy the vouchers from your salary before tax and National Insurance contributions are deducted. All parents are eligible to sign up for the scheme and receive Computershare Childcare Vouchers which can be used to pay for registered childcare for children aged from 0–16 years old. Registered childcare includes nurseries, childminders, holiday schemes, after school clubs, crèches, playgroups, nannies, approved au pairs and qualifying childcare provided by independent and maintained schools, each of which must be registered with Computershare Childcare Vouchers.

Makro Discount Card

Your colleague pass allows you and a friend or family member to get discounts across the store, with the exception of a few designated product groups.

Throughout the year, you and your family and friends will also be invited to take advantage of special extra discounts at staff shop nights.

Free Car Parking

Come to work and park for free in whichever store you join, as well as the Support Centre. Please note staff parking at our Nottingham Store is limited.

Relocation

We offer relocation on a role by role basis. If you need to relocate due to changes in the business, we may be able to offer you a relocation package.

Special Leave

We understand that there may be occasions when special leave may be required. We consider requests for special leave depending on bereavement, medical grounds or for other reasons.

Company Blackberry Phones

These are allocated on the basis of business need. If your role requires you to take and make calls while away from the office, you'll be allocated a Blackberry which you can also use for private use by tagging personal numbers. The cost of these calls is competitive and is deducted from your monthly salary.

Dry Cleaning Service

Colleagues at the Support Centre can take advantage of a discounted service provided by Cleancall, who can collect and deliver and who also iron shirts.

Social Club

Our Social Club offers a wide variety of activities, plus days and nights out. For a small contribution of £1 a month to the social fund, employees can enjoy subsidised activities, arranged by the social committee.

Family Friendly

We're very conscious of responsibilities to our people and we're aware of your responsibilities too. So we aim to create a family friendly workplace that offers:

Antenatal Care – you can attend your antenatal appointments with paid time off.

Paternity Leave – new fathers are entitled to 5 days' paid leave. Longer serving employees can choose to take a further week's leave paid at the same rate as statutory maternity leave. Part-time employees receive paternity leave on a pro-rata basis.

Fertility Treatment – if you're attending hospital to discuss and receive fertility treatment, you are entitled to paid time off. You can also have paid time off for up to 5 days' inpatient care, plus any entitlement due under our sick pay scheme.

Time off for Dependents – we will consider requests for unpaid time off from parents and carers who need to take action in emergency situations.

Maternity - All pregnant employees are entitled to 52 weeks' statutory maternity leave regardless of their length of service or hours of work.

Money & Savings

Pensions

To help people save more for their retirement, employees are auto enrolled into the company pension plan providing you meet the criteria set below;

  • - are not already in a qualifiying scheme with Makro
  • - earn over £9440 per year pre-tax and NI contributions (that's £727 each pay period)
  • - are aged 22 or over, but under the State Pension Age
  • - work or usually work in the UK

If you stay in the scheme you will have your own pension, which you can get when you retire. Once a Makro employee you can join the scheme at any time. Both you and Makro will contribute 1% of your earnings to your pension. You may opt to contribute more and Makro will meet your contributions up to 5%. The pension provider is Aviva and full details will be provided on commencement.

Save As You Earn

Makro employees can enjoy the benefits of being part of the Booker Group by participating in the Save As You Earn Scheme. This is a savings-related share scheme where you save month each month under the scheme and at the end of the savings contract you can buy shares with your savings for a fixed price. The scheme start dates are communicated to all eligible employees at the time.

Life Assurance

All employees benefit from being covered by a lump sum life assurance benefit, provided as a multiple of your annual basic salary and paid in the event of death in service.

Sick Pay

Our sick pay scheme is based upon your contracted hours and payments are made based on factors such as level of service, previous attendance record and reason for absence.

MOT & Servicing Discount (Manchester)

Makro has agreed discounted rates for employees which also offers a collection and delivery service of your vehicle. Although based near Manchester, all employees can take advantage of this benefit.

Tyres, MOT & Servicing

Kwik-Fit offers all Makro colleagues a discount of 20% on tyres. From time to time, these discounts apply to MOTs and Servicing.

Self Storage

Makro are able to provide a colleague discount on safe and secure storage needs through The Big Yellow Self Storage Company.
